Although flashcards, reading, math and other planned lessons are all effective tools in teaching children skills, pretend play is also a valuable instrument that cultivates imagination and social skills. Unless parents knew the importance of play in child development, it could easily be squeezed out of a schedule and replaced with other activities that don't meet the same needs.
When children are young they absorb information and skills as readily as a sponge. Their naturally curious tendencies make them question and explore the world around them.
