The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation- Protecting The Flora And Fauna Of Mauritius
By Ralph Ramah
Amid Rodrigues and Reunion Island lies another volcano sculptured façade, Mauritius. Mauritius is believed to be heavenly by one and many. With a tropical climate that most people long for, Mauritius has indeed a lot to offer. The hot temperature of the island during the summer and its exceptionally beautiful sea and shores can become the additional ingredients to make of your holiday an unforgettable one.

In addition to the sea and sand, you may as well experience the wildlife of Mauritius. Basically, Mauritius is a mountainous island and therefore has many species of plants and animals that live within its forests. Unfortunately, some of the various species of plants and animals such as birds have become endangered. If it had not been for the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation, many bird species would have already been lost. Mauritius may have equally lost some of its rare types of plants. The Mauritian Wildlife had been established in the year 1984 and was at that time known as the Mauritian Wildlife Appeal Fund. The MWF thus undertakes several responsibilities concerning the protection of the flora and fauna in Mauritius.

Moreover, the MWF works hard so as to protect the rare species of flora and fauna in Mauritius. Also, the MWF can similarly be responsible for organizing the collect of money for certain conservation schemes. Along with its associate organisations, the MWF monitors if these projects are being carried out efficiently. Furthermore, the MWF may as well inform the population of Mauritius about the works being carried out to protect the nature. By doing this, people may become more aware about the importance of the nature and therefore help the MWF by taking part in some of their activities. Sadly, the loss of several plants and animals in Mauritius may have been caused by

people who tampered with the balance of nature.

That is why, nowadays the MWF is active concerning several high importance projects in Mauritius such as preserving the Mauritian Kestrel, Pink Pigeon and the Echo Parakeet. On the other hand, other similarly important schemes include the Passerine Projects, Flora restoration around Mauritius, Round island restoration and Rodrigues restoration. The Ile aux Aigrettes is also controlled by the MWF where a number of works may also be carried out to keep an equilibrium amongst all the elements of the nature. In Mauritius, the MWF may have around 6 different stations. These are a couple of endemic plant nurseries, the Captive Breeding Centre and Gerald Durrell Endemic Wildlife Sanctuary among others. The also has a head office which is situated in Vacoas.

As years have passed by, the MWF has evolved into an important non-profit oragnisation. Today, around 40 Mauritian professionals work for the foundation. An additional 12 expatriates may as well work together with the Mauritians on several projects to protect some of the endangered species in Mauritius. Supporting their work is another 16 self funded Mauritians and expatriates. The MWF depends totally on charities and donations to fund its works, for only one simple reason, to keep Mauritius a beautiful island in its each and every aspect.
