St. Croix - Dive The Wall By John Allen You don’t hear as much about St. Croix compared to some other islands in the Caribbean. Not sure why it hasn’t received a like amount of promotion, but that’s good news for anyone looking to get away from the crowds, and do so at a fraction of what it costs elsewhere.
For divers, it’s an even better deal, since not only does it boast excellent diving, the likes of which aren’t found elsewhere, but less visitors translates into reefs that have remained more pristine and vibrant. Besides fewer residents and tourists, it also has more modestly priced lodging, food, gas, and nearly everything else, including dive packages and rental gear.
Some of the best diving on St. Croix is along the “Wall” that runs parallel to the north side. It’s only a couple hundred yards offshore, and can easily be reached with a short swim out from Cane Bay Beach. Stretching approximately 7 miles, it starts about 50’ deep and drops off to somewhere in the vicinity of 3200’.
Cruising along its face you’ll see all sorts of fishes, corals, sponges, turtles and various other marine life, but keep one eye out toward the blue. Reason is you’ll occasionally you’ll see a black-tip shark nosing around, and may have an opportunity to get close before spooking it. Also, the odd manta or eagle ray has been known to swoop in for a quick visit.
Over near Salt River, the location where Columbus landed in 1493, are several sites to the east and west of the reef where it protects the harbor. You’ll find huge coral heads with some small caves and giant swim-throughs. These are just plain fun, and dives there are always going to end way before you can tire of this part of the wall.
There are tons of crevices that provide ample hiding places for large lobster and crab, and by taking your time and looking in and under the ledges,

you’ll see them lurking. This area also attracts hawksbill turtles. An especially large one was nonplussed enough with divers to allow us to swim alongside for a good while.
Somewhere on your agenda, be sure and include a dive under the Frederiksted Pier. While most of the premier diving is along the north shore, this west-end location shouldn’t be missed. Especially for macro photographers, it’s a potpourri of goodies.
The pier was built for cruise ship traffic but with their absence over the last few years, it’s become home to a variety of creatures who’ve moved in. In fact it’s got more fish and other critters packed into a smaller area than most anywhere else you’ll visit. Interestingly enough, you’re virtually assured of seeing not just one octopus, but several on any given dive.
Any wreck divers wanting to visit will also be pleased to find several wreck sites to dive on. One is located on the northeast side and a couple more on the west end near Frederiksted. The deeper west-side site has a car ferry whose keel lies at 110’ and a tug sitting somewhat shallower around 65’ making them well within most divers limits.
While the wrecks have a fair amount of growth covering their surfaces, the overall structures remain distinct and provide enticing backgrounds for photo shots. The wheelhouse on the tug is an especially good subject whether as a backdrop or by itself. Most of the wrecks rest on a sandy bottom making them stand out clearly. You’ll also find several patches of garden eels in the vicinity.
In short, this island seems to have been overlooked by many dive travelers and is still waiting to be discovered by the masses. For those wanting a great dive destination, take time to explore what Saint Croix has to offer. It’s hard to beat either the first-rate diving, or the great prices.
