Drug Abuse – Causes, Signs And Symptoms By Peter sams
Introduction
Drugs are an integral part of everyday life for many people, and drug use among adolescents remains high (See Problems in Adolescents: Drug and Substance Use and Abuse). The legality and social acceptance of a particular drug often depend on what it is used for, what its effects are, and who is using it. For example, use of marijuana for pleasure is illegal and considered socially unacceptable by many people, but use of marijuana to relieve nausea in a person with advanced cancer has been legalized by some governments and is viewed as acceptable by some people.
Drug abuse is the use of illicit drugs, or the abuse of prescription or over-the-counter drugs. The abuse of legitimate drugs (prescription or over-the-counter) can happen when people use the drugs in a manner or in quantities other than directed, or for purposes that are not legitimate. See also drug abuse first aid and drug abuse and dependence.
Drug Misuse Introduction
Drug addiction is when you become dependant on a drug, and it forms a central part of your life. Misusing drugs can lead to physical dependency, or psychological dependency.
Physical dependency means that your body has become so used to a drug that you get physical withdrawal symptoms if you stop taking it. This means that you have to keep taking the drug to stop yourself feeling ill.
Examples of other drugs that are commonly misused include alcohol, tobacco, prescribed medicines including painkillers, sleeping tablets, and cold remedies, glues, aerosols, gases and solvents.
Abuse: Use becomes abuse when it continues despite persistent or recurrent social, occupational, psychological or physical problems caused by or made worse by this use. Use before driving a car or engaging in other activities that are dangerous when under the influence of a psychoactive substance also qualifies as abuse. The transition from use to abuse is often gradual, and there is no clear threshold for defining the point at which use becomes abuse. Frequency and quantity of use are important considerations, as
is the extent to which drug use has become a regular feature of one's lifestyle.
Types Of Drug Abuse
Herbal medicines are considered drugs. They are not regulated by the FDA. If the creators of an herbal supplement make a health claim about it, the label must say that the FDA has not evaluated its safety. However, because some plants contain chemicals, they should be used carefully.
Alcohol is also considered a drug. Even though it is heavily promoted for relaxation, excessive use can cause health problems. It is a factor in more than half of all accidental deaths. People who become physically and psychologically dependent on it suffer from a disease called alcoholism. It is illegal to drink alcohol if you are under 21 years of age.
Causes of Drug Abuse
