Recycling Electronic And Computer Equipment In Calgary Initiative By A Computer Retailer
(ContentDesk) April 15 2004 -- Unwanted electronics fill our landfills, at a staggering rate. The people at Express Store have decided to take a first step, in dealing with the impact of the millions of tons of electronics currently ending up in our countries landfills. They have joined the Electronic Recycling Associations list of retailers to accept old electronics back for recycling at their store. This promises a start to responsibly dealing with this modern concern. Express Store and Electronic Recycling Association partner up to offer this joint program to organizations and individuals in Calgary with electronic equipment fit for recycling. Companies are asked to drop off their items at Express Store. From there, these items will be collected by the Electronic Recycling Association of Alberta and dealt with appropriately. Currently accepting computers, laptops, stereo equipment, VCRs, DVDs, and other electronic items for recycling. Donated electronic equipment will be accepted free of charge from companies and individuals. Equipment will put it to good use by providing it to people on low incomes, charities, start up businesses and any other groups that can benefit from this social and environmentally beneficial program. Under one of the charitable programs operated by ERA, serviceable surplus I.T. can also be repaired and sold, with these revenues donated to charity. Unusable equipment will be provided to specialist companies that are members of the Electronic Recycling Association and can recycle these items environmentally. This location is one of a few to start taking initiative in reducing the amount of possibly toxic waste from reaching our landfills. Currently there are no laws or regulations to prevent anyone from dumping large amounts of electronic equipment there. Alberta government is attempting to develop

They are working on setting up this program with all electronics retailers. One-day events do not address the entire problem. This program is the solution. Event notice: John Howard Society and Electronic Recycling Association of Alberta are planning a community event on the 21st of April. This event will be geared towards non-for profit organizations and different charities that are in need of equipment to enable their business to operate. All Alberta based non-for profit groups and charities are invited to attend and request equipment from the E.R.A. Electronic Recycling Association of Alberta is a non-for profit organization working with the public and private sector helping companies and the public deal with unwanted electronic items. Electronic Recycling Association currently provides equipment to The Alex Center in Calgary to help their "Woman on a Shoestring" program. This program is geared towards business women on low incomes that could not otherwise afford this type of equipment. Further equipment is being refurbished by E.R.A technicians and will be provided to more individuals in need through this program.
