The central plateau is bordered by mountains. The climate in Mauritius is tropical. Therefore, cyclones tend to affect the island during the months of December to April. Mauritius is also an island rich in multi ethnicity. The Mauritian population may be divided as follows: 68 percent of Indo Mauritians, 27 percent of Creoles, 3 percent of Sino-Mauritians and 2 percent of Franco-Mauritians.
