Keeping Your Squad Happy: How To Control Team Conflict

Even the closest squads have their problems. Working with a group of girls can often result in miscommunication and tension. Not every situation needs to turn into a major conflict and with these great tips, you can cut down on the “drama” and take control of issues before they become problems.


  • Communicate: Communication is the key to developing a healthy bond with your squad. The members of your team will not be able to read your mind. Let them know exactly what you expect from them as members of the squad. Likewise, it’s important to make them feel that can express themselves openly to you and the rest of the squad. You act as an example for your team, so don’t approach them in a manner you would not want them to reflect. Cheerleaders that communicate well will each other grow as a team. A lack of communication can ruin an entire season.



  • Take a Direct Route: When problems get out of hand, the last thing you want to do is work your way up or down the gossip trail trying to piece together the problem. When you are made aware of or notice a problem among your team members go directly to the source. Speak to them in a direct but non confrontational way to find out the facts. The only time you should approach members not directly involved in the issue is when it will help shed light on the issue at hand.


  • Don’t let Problems Grow: Assuming a problem will resolve itself can only result in a larger problem down the road. If members of your squad approach you about an issue they feel is important, be sure to address it immediately. It’s also important that you pay attention to the interactions between your cheerleaders. No member of the team should be uncomfortable or feel like they don’t belong. If you notice this happening you need to resolve

    the issues and make sure every member of your team is treated equally.



  • Keep Problems Private: If a member of your team approaches you about a problem he or she is having, allow them the confidence and privacy they deserve. Never bring other members of the team in on issues unless they are directly involved with them. In order for your team to grow and bond they need to feel they can trust each other. Discussing the personal problems of a member of the team with the entire squad is not only a betrayal of their trust, but it also sets a horrible example. The only time you should discuss an individual who came to you in confidence is when the individual is a danger to his/her self or others. Even then, you should only discuss it with parents or school officials.


  • Keep Emotions Out of It: One of your roles as a coach it to take a bipartisan role during any team conflicts. This means you need to keep your emotions out of it and take action according to facts not personal beliefs or emotions. It may help to think about the problem from all sides and take each member opinions into account. Remember, you can’t always please everyone with your decision, but your goal is to make the best decision for your team and its members.
