Tail call elimination in Javascript
Via LtU I read about a tail call optimization decorator. Of course I immediately wondered if it was possible in JavaScript, and it is: Function.prototype.tailCallOptimized = function() { var g = this; return function() { for (var caller = arguments. …

No more accesskeys
I had accesskeys for the tabs at the top of this site, but Mark Wubben reminded me that this was very annoying, mainly because alt-d was one of them (the shortcut to focus the address bar). This makes me think that using accesskeys in webpages is not a very good idea, because you never know what the favorite shortcut keys of your visitor are.

If you're wondering what a base URI is for, you'll always end up being directed to RFC 3986, but you won't find much. Section 5.1 just says: “The term "relative" implies that a "base URI" exists against which the relative reference is applied.”. …

Sometimes it's really interesting to live in the centre of the administrative capital of the Netherlands. Today we had a referendum for ratification of the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe. I had to vote in the city hall. Warm Up Before Exercising
By Sarah Russell

When you exercise, you need to warm up, period. This is because when you warm up, you slowly increase the amount of stress put on your body, which in turn causes a in blood flow, respiration, oxygen and nutrient levels delivered to cells. When you do this gradual increase in activity, you get your body ready and primed to do really strenuous exercise. You’re not only preventing injury, but you’ll also increase the quality and effectiveness of your workout in general.

Warming up properly gets the nervous system ready to respond to the extra stress put on your body during exercise. It also makes you more mentally alert and aware, loosens up muscles and joints so that you are less likely to injure yourself, and gives your heart the chance to adjust itself to the extra workload it's going to encounter. Skipping a proper warm up dramatically increases your chances of injury during your workout. This is especially important for older people to do, since their joints tend to be less fluid and their hearts are generally weaker.

How do you warm up properly? In general, you want to gently get your body ready for exercise by slowly increasing your heart rate. One way you can do this is to simply walk or jog in place gently, or do a few jumping jacks if you feel your joints can take it. You can also use exercise equipment such as a bicycle or rowing machine. Start out at a slow and gentle pace, and then slowly increase as you feel able, until your heart rate rises and your body temperature increases.

The length of your warm-up will depend on your fitness level - very fit people will warm up much more quickly, while less fit people will take some time to do so. In addition, people who are more fit will be able to engage in much more strenuous activity than people at lower fitness levels. When you finish your warm-up, you should be energized and ready to go onto your main form of exercise, not exhausted and ready to curl up and go to sleep. In general, shoot for three to five minutes, or until you are lightly sweating. Listen to your body and make sure it’s ready to go before you start vigorous exercise.

Stretching is another important part of your warm-up and will help you increase

your flexibility, particularly in the spine, shoulder and hip areas. The type of stretching you do will depend on what activity you are going to engage in. For example, if you're going to play sports, you want to stretch so that the movements you do mimic the sport you'll be doing. For example, if you're going to do martial arts, do these types of moments at about a quarter of the normal speed. You can also do static stretches that warm up the major muscle groups – hold each pose for about thirty seconds to achieve maximum benefit.

If you're going to be lifting weights, you should warm up first and then begin your weight lifting program with 50 to 60, then 90%, and then finally the full weight, decreasing each to two or three repetitions on the last set. After you're finished, rest for 30 seconds, and then repeat the same cycle over. After you've done this warm-up, you can do your heavy lifting. When you warm-up in this way, the heavy sets you lift will feel less so and will be less stressful on your body.

After you warm up and have gone on to your main workout, you'll need to cool down after the workout is over. If you don't, you could risk serious injury or even a heart attack. If you stop vigorous exercise suddenly, you risk blood pooling up in your legs, which can lead to lower blood pressure, fainting and dizziness. When you cool down, you want to slowly lessen physical activity - but keep doing it - over 5 or 10 minutes, until your body temperature has cooled down and your heart rate and respirations have gone back to normal.

Performing a good warm-up and cool-down is a critical part of your fitness plan that will help prevent injury and make your workouts more enjoyable. Seriously, professional athletes never skip these two workout segments, and neither should you. You’ll stay healthier and stick with your fitness program longer.

Traditionally, core features like reporting and analytics have been the focus of BI technology choices, but as those features get commoditized, a whole new set of possibilities has emerged. Forrester's BI research shows that the technology is evolving and that enterprises on the cutting edge of these new trends can gain competitive advantage in their industries.

Topic Overview: eBusiness And The Economy
Nov 6, 2008: The silver lining in the cloud of the global recession is that Web businesses are certain to fare better than their offline counterparts as consumers continue to shift their daily activities online. Forrester analysts have studied the overall effect of the economic downturn on consumer behavior online and the steps that companies in industries ranging from retail to travel to financial services can do to address these changes. For Web businesses to win, they must effectively address customer confidence issues, convey value in their products, and focus on customer retention.
Topic Overview: Enterprise Apps Vendor Selection
Nov 3, 2008: Choosing the right vendor remains a critical success factor for every enterprise's business success. Consolidation in the vendor market, a plethora of deployment options, and the progression to a next generation of applications built with service-oriented architecture (SOA) and Web services drive customers to augment, upgrade, replace, or migrate from existing systems. Forrester's vendor selection research provides a knowledge base of the basics, best practices, trends information, forecasts, strategic advice, and vendor and product comparisons that firms need to navigate the complexities of selecting, implementing, upgrading to, extending, or migrating to new solutions.
Topic Overview: Strategies To Cut Application Costs Using Diagnostic And Monitoring Tools
Nov 4, 2008: Once developers have implemented and stabilized applications in a production environment, the applications are placed in "maintenance mode"; thereafter, many receive little scrutiny. As time passes, business volumes grow and hardware components change. The processing efficiency of applications under maintenance can wane to a point where consumption of memory, storage, processor, and other resources becomes excessive. Whether the economy is doing well or poorly, applications professionals have the opportunity to avoid expensive server, memory, and storage upgrades by leveraging the available performance monitoring and diagnostic tools to identify, eliminate, and implement controls to prevent the recurrence of wasted application resources.
Topic Overview: Must-Read I&KM Research For An Economic Downturn
Oct 4, 2008: Financial bailouts, downward consumer spending, and roller-coaster stock markets are starting to put pressure on information and knowledge management (I&KM) professionals. Will industry consolidation mean gut-wrenching systems consolidation? How will budgets be affected? And how must I&KM leaders adapt their strategies? The good news: CEOs and CIOs still crave innovation, the need for trusted business information has never been higher, and many already in-flight collaboration strategies will bear fruit in the coming months by connecting dislocated organizations virtually to solve tough problems. I&KM pros must do three things during this period: squeeze more value from existing investments like enterprise content management (ECM) or business process management (BPM); assess their current costs; and seek out incremental project opportunities that deliver fast, visible results. In spite of budget pressure, I&KM pros must also keep a handful of critical "must do" projects on track and plan to jump-start innovation-driven projects that will help the enterprise "power" out of the economic downturn.
Topic Overview: Forrester Methodologies Defend IT Actions In A Down Economy
Oct 2, 2008: Forrester employs four methodologies — TechRadar, Total Economic Impact (TEI), the Forrester Wave, and Best Practices — that align with the decisions you face every day as CIO. This Topic Overview connects the four methodologies and summarizes key research published behind each in 2008. You and your organization should lean on these tools to articulate and defend decisions related to IT strategy, investment justification, vendor selection, and optimization of people and processes.
Topic Overview: Member Experience For Health Plans
Sep 2, 2008: Health plans can't afford to deliver subpar member experiences any longer. With a growing individual market, increased cost shifting, and a rising focus on disease and wellness management, strong member experience practices are the price of entry, and exceptional experiences are critical for differentiation. To rise above today's poor performance, health plan customer experience professionals must master the disciplines of strategic healthcare communication: Pave the way for lifestyle support by getting the basics right, adopting a member-centric approach to messaging, and employing communication measurement science. Forrester's health plan-focused and cross-industry customer experience research identifies emerging member trends, experience best practices, and measurement approaches that help health plans gain the skills they need to deliver strategic healthcare communication.
Topic Overview: Service-Oriented Architecture For Enterprise Architects
Aug 2, 2008: Most architects now recognize that service-oriented architecture (SOA) is much more than Web services (WS) standards and better application integration. SOA continues to gain industry recognition as a key element of strategic business transformation — which is a much higher level of business impact than mere application integration. Strategic SOA-based business services increase both business and application flexibility, providing a modular, digital-world implementation of your business that is ready to connect to any customer, employee, supplier, or partner wherever and whenever. Web services add value to SOA by providing a standards-based ecosystem and open access via loose technology coupling. For architects to lead their organizations on a successful SOA journey, they must understand SOA's overarching concepts, its relationship to business design, and its impact on governance, technology platforms, solution delivery life cycles, and architecture management.
Topic Overview: Service-Oriented Architecture For CIOs
Aug 6, 2008: The worst CIO misunderstanding about service-oriented architecture (SOA) is to think of it only as another technical initiative for software reuse. Although SOA's reuse potential is real and good, its business impact goes much further: In Forrester surveys, 44% of current SOA users say they are using it for strategic business transformation. SOA's true source of power is its ability to start from and focus on business design. By correctly understanding SOA, CIOs can lead their organizations on a solid and well-managed path to greater business technology value.
Topic Overview: Corporate Social Responsibility
Jul 6, 2008: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a topic is currently enjoying the limelight in shareholder meetings, political debate, industry events, advertising space, and other arenas throughout business and popular culture. Corporations worldwide are feeling pressure to respond to this trend, although questions of what to do and how much to commit persist. Forrester views CSR through the eyes of many different roles, helping clients to develop CSR strategies, share and coordinate best practices, and leverage existing and burgeoning technologies to facilitate its execution.
Topic Overview: ERP Applications 2008
Jun 3, 2008: Enterprise applications suites, commonly known as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, represent the transactional backbone for most enterprises and comprise a variety of applications for finance and administration as well as industry-specific applications for business operations. Comprehensive ERP suites from leading vendors now typically span customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management (SCM), analytics, and other applications traditionally sold as best-of-breed products. As vendors and enterprises enter the next generation of applications that support new deployment options like software-as-a-service (SaaS), deliver on service-oriented architecture (SOA) principles, and support business processes via Web services, Forrester's ERP research provides the knowledge of the basics, best practices, trends, strategic advice, and vendor and product comparisons that firms need in order to navigate the complexities across the software ownership life cycle.
Topic Overview: Interactive Marketing
Jun 6, 2008: Interactive marketing tactics are crucial for marketers who seek new ways to create relevant and engaging customer communications. Forrester's interactive marketing research studies current and emerging interactive strategies and channels to help marketers prioritize investment in interactive channels, understand best practices and potential pitfalls of the interactive channels, evaluate and select technology and services vendors to support interactive marketing initiatives, and integrate interactive efforts into their traditional marketing mix.
