Impotence - Corrupted Virility

Impotence can be defined as consistent inability to sustain an erection of the male sexual organ that is required for sexual intercourse. When we talk about ‘impotence’ in general, it may apply to any person who is not capable producing the progeny. But overall, impotence is usually applied to a male having no sufficient erection or one who cannot stand longer. Medical professionals label this as ‘erectile dysfunction’ to narrate this problem and to differentiate it from other health ailments that interfere with coitus like lack of sexual desire and other problems with ejaculation and orgasm.
Causes for impotence
There are various reasons that give raise to impotency in males. Impotence generally has a physical cause like some disease, injury or any drug’s side-effect. Any health problem that alters the blood flow in the male sexual organ can also cause impotency. The incidences do rise with the age; about 5% of men at the age of 40 and between 15%-25% of men at the age of 65 experience impotence. Nevertheless, it is not an inevitable part of the age of a man.
Various underlying causes such as cardiovascular leakage and chronic disease like diabetes can also cause impotency. Sometimes, prostatectomy surgery can also damage nerve that can cause chronic erectile dysfunction. Health experts do not deny mental stress, anxiety and depression as three of the causes that bring impotency in men. Male hormone deficiency can also result into impotency.
Some of the folk medicinal systems such as Ayurveda suggest that over-masturbation can also result in impotency. Some of the other anomalies such as absence of testes and structural defects of male genital organs can also cause impotency.
Signs and symptoms of impotence
Impotency could feature a total inability to achieve tighter and fuller erection of the penis.
It can also feature inconsistent ability to do so and sometimes even tendency to sustain erections for very shorter period that ends into early ejaculation and dissatisfaction. These symptoms can make a ‘set’ that can be considered as a whole while determining the impotency. Statistics reveal that impotency affects between 10-15 million American men.
Treatment of impotence
There are many ways to treat impotency. However, congenital and structural anomalies may be difficult to treat or cannot be treated. If male hormone is lacking, it can be replaced and hence can be treated. Massaging the affected area also improves blood circulation and can help curing the problem. If the mental stress is the culprit, psychotherapy works wonderfully.
Some of the herbs such as Ginseng, Indian gooseberry, Asparagus, Withania, Mucuna etc have significant role in treating impotency in males. They can be taken with milk for maximum benefit. If there is a blockage in the blood flow, it can be corrected by surgery.
Ayurveda favors completely stoppage of masturbation at least till the problem is fully treated. Mineral pitch (Shilajit) plays significant role in treating erectile dysfunction. The drugs that rejuvenate the body (called as ‘rasayana dravyas’) are very useful gaining the vigor back and to achieve the sexual power. Some of the medicated oils (like Shatavari oil, Bala oil etc) can also provide strength to the male organ.
