The Best Spots To Dive In Krabi
By Andy Burrows
Right in the thick of it is the seaside town of Krabi, centrally located between the region’s main dive sites. Most of the local dive shops operate out of Ao Nang, a small beach town 30 minutes from Krabi, and arguably a better place to hang out. Here you can get the lowdown on water conditions, diving options and instruction if you’re new to the sport.

Ao Nang also makes a great place to bunk down during your visit to the Krabi region. Ao Nang online tourist guide There are plenty of guesthouses in all budgets, as well as restaurants and a decent nightlife scene. Most visitors can satisfy all their underwater urges with the five excellent dive sites right off the coast of Ao Nang. Dives are available for people of all abilities, and there are plenty of snorkelling spots if you prefer to stay on the surface of the water.

Ao Nang’s diving revolves around Koh Poda and its seven neighbouring islets which are all part of the larger Hat Nopparat Thara-Mu Koh Phi Phi Marine National Park. The diversity of marine life in this park is astounding, with more than 80 species of coral and 200 species of fish in the vicinity. The nearest and most popular site around Ao Nang is Koh Dor, home to excellent coral gardens and the elusive black-tip reef shark. Its proximity also makes it a bit crowded, so consider a couple of other spots to round out your agenda. “Actually, I didn’t mind the other divers,” confessed a young Brit on holiday, “especially the ladies,” he added.

Koh Talu and GK Island, which sit next to each other, are good all-around sites with a nice variety of underwater terrain and sea life. If you’re a more experienced diver, you may want to check out Koh Yawabon. The strong currents around this tiny island mean that most tour boats don’t stop here, resulting in massive schools of fish and very few other divers.

If you’re a beginner, Koh Yawasam and Koh Si are the ideal islands for learning the sport. Long stretches of shallow coral reef and flat sandy spots offer a tempting taste of what lies deeper and farther from shore. These two islands are also the best snorkelling sites around Krabi thanks to their shallow reef systems which are teeming with life.

Krabi and Ao Nang are good bases if you want to explore the other world famous dive sites found farther out near Phuket and the Phi Phi Islands. Daytrips are regularly scheduled to these amazing spots, which broaden the range of sights you can experience. King Cruiser is one such unique dive site where a large car ferry sank in 1997. The wreck has been taken over by some unusual sea creatures and is a totally different experience from the usual reef systems.

But if you are really interested in seeing more of the area, you should do some diving at the Shark Point Marine Sanctuary to the south of Phuket. The two sites here, Shark Point and Anemone Reef, are simply amazing and are well worth the daytrip even though they are often a bit crowded. Shark Point is named for the abundance of leopard sharks which linger on the sandy bottom, while Anemone Reef is a

series of underwater pinnacles covered in anemones and the Nemo-like fish which swim through their poisonous tentacles. “Hundreds of Nemo fish swimming through a field of anemones was definitely the highlight of my dive,” said a woman from Germany.

The visibility in the Andamam Sea around Krabi is fantastic, averaging 20 meters, and stretching as far as 30 meters or more during the calm dry season from November to April. However, even the ‘green season’, from May to October, is a great time to dive around Krabi. Conditions remain decent despite being the rainy season, and nearly all the good dive sites are deserted. Another attractive factor is an average water temperature of 30°C, which allows for comfortable diving all year round. “A tad nicer than my usual dives off the coast of England,” said an elderly British man. Krabi’s mind-blowing dive sites

With such an abundance of quality diving and snorkelling sites at affordable prices, it’s no wonder that Krabi has become a major hub for diving in Southeast Asia. Getting to Krabi gets easier every year, especially now that regular flights are flying in and out of Krabi’s tiny airport from Bangkok. Travellers can also fly into Phuket’s international airport and take a short minibus or boat ride to Krabi. With new dive sites being added all the time, there’s no question about the future of southern Thailand’s role as one of the world’s greatest affordable diving destinations.
