CAD programme - an eye opener to Cardiologists, Heart patientsand Political executives. 23RD TO 24TH jULY 2005. 1. Programme for Cardiologists and Specialist doctors. With the association of Sri Chitra Thirunal Institute of MedicalScience and Technology, the first programme was organised at themodern auditorium of Achuta Menon Centre of the Institute. Theobjective was to sensitize the senior doctors the effectivenessof the concept of changing life styles for caring and curingheart ailments. The Director SCTIMST Dr. K Mohandas welcomed thegathering. Dr, Mohandas emphasized that the heart ailment isever expanding disease even affecting the people of the youngerage and that the expertise and facilities now available forcatering to the disease is limited. Any methodology to tacklethe problem could be quite a welcome step to provide relief tolarge number of patients awaiting especially the surgicalintervention. Dr. Satish Gupta in his well sequenced powerpresentation touched the overall scenario of the overwhelmingphenomenon of progression of the disease and went on convincingthe participants the new concept of tackling the problem throughlife style changes. With the empirical evidences of his researchsince 1995 aided by DRDO and Ministry of Health GOI. A few realevidence of CAD regression was also presented to theparticipants. After the session there was an interactive sessionwhere the participants came up with queries. Dr. Gupta respondedwell with effective answers.
2. Programme on Prevention and Management of heart diseases for320 selected heart patients The objective of the programme wasto make the heart patients aware of the new comprehensivemethodology of practicing systematic life style changes forregression of the ailment. Each patient was supplied with adetailed brochure (a copy attached as Appendix I) and anapplication for registration. The applications were scrutinizedat the centre on preferential basis and patients with severeheart problems were selected and informed to attend theprogramme. Conduct of the programme The programme commenced at9.30 am at the VJT Hall having a capacity for 325 participants It was quite heartening to see that the hall was full ofpatients before the commencement of the programme. There was abrief inaugural session by a very senior and renowned physicianDr. Krishnadas. In his inaugural speech, he emphasized theimportance of a holistic approach namely the soul, mind and bodyelements in unison to tackle the problem. Dr. Satish Gupta firstevoked the interest of the participants by presenting theever-growing problem of high demand for care and cure and lowsupply of expertise and facilities in respect of heart ailments.In 1960 only one percent of the adult population in the Countrywas suffering from heart diseases. In 2000 it rose to 15 percentand in another 5 years as many as 30 percent of the adultpopulation would be suffering from heart diseases. Dr. SatishGupta said that there are about 15 lakhs of heart patients areawaiting surgery but the entire facility available in thecountry can accommodate only 1.5 lakh patients. Further therewas a convincing presentation on the research programmeconducted and the results on regression of the ailment. Thefirst session in the afternoon was engaged by sister Bala Guptaon proper nutrition for heart patients. This
also evokedinterest among the participants. The message of love, affectionand spiritual blessings from Dadiji was presented by SisterMinni, which was well received by the participants. The lastsession was devoted to the benefits of practicing Rajayoga, thekey factor in the systematic approach for changing life style.Towards the end there was an interactive session where theparticipants were free to ask questions. Dr. Guptaji gaveconvincing replies to all the queries. It appeared that Dr.Guptaji was very much impressed by the enthusiasm shown by theparticipants in understanding various items in the presentation.Dr. promised that he would take care of patients who wantedfurther training and treatment at Mount Abu. Sister Minniinvited the participants who desire to undergo Rajayoga practiseat the Pettah Centre. The session came to an end afterpresenting gifts to all the patients by Dr. Gupta, BK Bala Guptaand Sister Minni. Sister Shanti proposed vote of thanks. SisterBindhu performed comparing. All the participants were suppliedwith a diet chart, schedule for exercise, Rajayogacommentary for opening coronary artery (Appendix II). Coverageby media The premiere channel, Asianet covered the entireprogramme and telecast it 3 times. The leading dailies also senttheir correspondents to cover the programme. Copies of the newsappeared in some of the dailies are attached as Appendix III. 3.Awareness programme on Prevention and Managementof Heart Ailments for the Political Executives (Ministers andMlAs of Kerala) The penultimate and most important session byDr. Satish Gupta was for the power centers of the State vizMinisters and MLAs at the state of- the art- auditorium attachedto the Legislative complex. It was quite satisfying to see 103MLAs, 3 of the Ministers and the Honourable Speaker who filledthe auditorium at the scheduled time. Some of the Secretaries tothe Govt. , Senior Officers of Health dept. and those of theLegislative Secretariate also attended. The inaugural sessionwas presided over by the Honourable Speaker Sri. TherambilRamakrishnan. The Health Minister Sri. K. K. Ramachandran masterwelcomed the assembly. In the inaugural speech, the HonourableSpeaker emphasized that the changes in life style and increasein stress were the main reasons for heart diseases. He addedthat leading a more disciplined life by practicing Rajayogacould be more helpful in reducing the stress and strainespecially to Ministers and MLAs. Dr. Satish Gupta started ofwith the alarming statistics of ever growing heart ailments andemphasized that without spending even a single paise, theconcept of user friendly life style will be a boon to thosesuffering from the disease. The focus was shifted to theresearch programme conducted on CAD regression and the empiricalevidence of the research was presented. Rajayoga meditation fora short spell was conducted by sister Minni. The entire audienceattending the programme for 2 hours spell bound proved that theywere very much impressed with the presentation. The HonourableSpeaker and the Minister for Health were very much satisfiedwith the programme and the Speaker promised that any programmein continuation can be done in the Legislative complex. Therewas a fitting coverage of the programme by both visual and printmedia. About the author:Dr. Gupta is a Rajayogi and belives in prevention is better thancure. He has reversed the heart blockages for more than 500patients to whom the heart surgery was must.
